Saturday, September 8 - Serve dinner at Jessie's Place 4:30-5:30 pm. Mark will handle the meal this month but could use a hand serving!

Wednesday, September 12 - VA Hospital. Be at DF by 5:30 pm. We need a couple of drivers so... step right up!

Sunday, September 16 - Meeting of all parents, students, and anyone else interested in our young people. We'll talk about this school year and next summer. Time and location TBA.

VA HOSPITAL this Wednesday 6/11

We'll head over to the VA and hang out with our friends there and serve ice-cream. If you have a guitar, a poem, a song, a piece of prose, a crazy human trick, magic trick, body contortion, whatever, bring it, and we'll provide some entertainment. Something to think about is how we can also serve the VA guys on Sunday mornings that are with us for worship.

HS guys THEOCENTRICS this Wed. nite 6/11 after the VA. We'll spend some time around the red table in prayer, read through the book of James, then take it to Chipotle for some tacos, chips and salsa, and conversation.

MAFIA/M.I.D./MANHUNT GAMES this Friday @7pm

We'll meet up at the bldg at 7pm, do some pricing and organizing for the yard sale, and then play some mafia, murder in the dark, and manhunt afterwards. We'll call it a nite by 9:30pm, b/c the next morning is the...

DF YARD SALE

Time to clean out the garage of all your useless stuff that would otherwise be donated to local dumpsters or thrift stores. Bring it up and put in in the HS room.

HS guys THEOCENTRICS tonite

(Wed 6.27) @7:30 pm at el mesa rojo (the red table, for all you non-Honduran speaking guys) in the student room. Bring your Bible. Theocentrics will be meeting every Wednesday night after the gathering for conversation, experiencing new forms of prayer, exploring the Sermon on the Mount and the letter of James , storytelling, watching videos, etc. Come hang out and let's seek the presence of our God together for about an hour and a half.

JH guys NIGHTSHIFT this Friday

JH guys (entering 6th-8th) Nightshift @ the home of the Reals this Friday (6.29.07) @ 8:00pm. We’ll stay the night, wake up, eat a hearty pancake breakfast cooked by Chef LePriest, and head to the car wash up at the building from 10 am to 2pm.

Bring: swimsuit, towel, flashlight, sleeping bag and pillow, and a few bucks to cover snacks and breakfast, along with your Bible.

Here’s what to expect: some swim action, perhaps a movie, prayer, camping out in the gazebo, painting each others nails (just kidding, fellas), and talking about the story of God.

leave: from the bldg @ 9:30 am, Monday 6/11. we’ll return around 7pm to the bldg.

bring: big water bottle, swimsuit, towel, shoes/sandals you can hike in, sunscreen, Frisbees and other projectiles, and $5 (2 for park entrance, 3 for bratwurst/hotdog grill out for supper in the park)

be prepared to: swim, hike, grill out, learn a spiritual discipline, tame wild beasts, and perhaps have a paddle-boat race.

at some point, we'll hopefully do the treetop nature trail, hike to the falls, swim at the lake, and check out the wildlife rehab center. yippie-yo-kai-yay!

Parents of 6^th – 12^th grades are invited to a conversation regarding plans and direction for the student ministry here at DF. We will gather from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Lorna Rd. building. The main area for discussion will be to continue discussing the plans for next summer. i.e. Mark & Lori in Honduras, summer interns, etc. Please come as everyone’s input is needed.

Other items to touch on briefly….. the Tuesday idea of trying to gather with a MS or HS thing needs a brief discussion about whether we are committed to it or need something else to give our students an opportunity to be together. I (mark) would also like to just open the floor briefly for any other topics on people’s minds. I (mark) need (really) to hear from any or all of you about anything or everything.

Honduras deadline!! If you and/or your child are considering the two week trip to Honduras (June 1^st -15^th), I need you to make decisions by Dec. 3^rd. I will have applications available beginning this Wednesday.

December 29^th – January 1^st

Last Hour ’06. This is a retreat with Randy Harris in Pensacola, FL hosted by the First City Church. Registration for the event is $70. Additional costs for rooms will largely depend on how many students go. We will have a deadline of November 19^th to sign up. That gives us two weeks. After we know how many are planning to attend we will figure out the various details of lodging, transportation, chaperones, costs, etc. Look for applications beginning Wednesday.

In an effort to keep everyone up-to-date....

Info from our High School Bible Class......

Each week in our high school class we attempt to flesh out the morning worship topic. This past week (10/1) we began talking about "meditation." We are transformed and shaped by those things we think about, contemplate, and dwell on. In an effort to encourage that thinking contemplating and dwelling to be focused toward God and or Jesus, the students each wrote a personal prayer to God that they would pray everyday throughout the month of October.

Encourage them!! Offer to join them!! A regular prayer meditation is a great thing for all of us!!

Ralph Parrish and Kris Lowry teach our Middle Schoolers. Here is a summary from their class this past week.

Ralph says.....On Sunday we came from the text in Isaiah 7-8 concerning the story of Ahaz. The king whom God told to be calm and do not worry and he would take care of the kingdom of Judah. We began by discussing choices in life and how, especially today, we demand immediate responses. We also discussed how we like to make choices which we can control the outcome instead of waiting on God’s timing and plans. Our discussion recognized that Ahaz made the choice based on the available choices he understood instead of having faith in God and then based on that choice the king of Assyria ruled Judah and stripped them of all wealth. If he had chosen God’s direction it may have taken longer but the outcome was promised to be different.

Ask them about it!

Prayer Breakfasts...... there will be two of these every week. They will last 20-30 minutes.
1. Chik-fil-A (Hoover Commons) on Tuesdays at 6:51 am.
2. Chik-fil-A (Hwy 119) on Thursdays at 7:01 am
An opportunity to spend a morning a week encouraging each other. One in Hoover for our Northerners (Hoover, Vestavia, etc.). The other near Oak Mtn. for our Southerners (Pelham, Oak Mtn., etc.).

MS Scrum...... 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (Starting Sept. 19). 7:01 - 8:01 pm. At Lorna unless you hear otherwise.

We all realize that schedules can be tough... we are all more busy than is healthy! With that in mind, I want to encourage everyone to try to commit to making some time to be a part of these things. If it is impossible for you and your family, let me know so that we can see what we can do to accomodate you. Why are we doing these thing? To encourage and create community...

Definitions of "Community"...... 1 : a unified body of individuals. 2 : an interacting population of various kinds of individuals. 3 : a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society.......

Hebrews 10:25..... "Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting together, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord's coming is getting closer."

This Sunday the MS/HS classes will be meeting together as our MS teachers will all be traveling.

Next Wednesday, September 6, is VA Hospital day. Let me know if you can help drive. Meet at Lorna (that will be short for Lorna Rd. building) at 5:30. We will return to Lorna by 7:30.

Just a reminder that there is a meeting for all MS/HS students/parents on Sunday, September 10. Details are still being worked out. We will be talking about schedules, events, passing around sign-up sheets, etc., etc. I am xcited to share with all of you some of my heart about the ministry here and I am also anxious for you to share with me .

In HS class on Sunday AM, we continued the discussion on encouragement begun in the worship. Want to know what our high schoolers say encourages them?

(in no particular order)

Words of encouragement: spoken, cards, letters. (especially when said by that "somebody special")
Seeing the success of others around them
When people around them agree with their thinking (affirmation that they aren't crazy for what they think)
Good food
Playing sports
Seeing hard work pay off (scoring well on a test after studying hard)
Being with others that have a lot of energy
Music
Just being with friends
Of course, Jesus

Here are some of the things they will be doing to give encouragement to others this week:

Compliment friends
Get real about some things with a friend
Include others that don't seem to have many friends
Help some friends with Chemistry
